ROTHESAY MOUNT STUART ROAD RACE, SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER
It looked like an assault by aliens as the Rothesay ferry unloaded a mass of colourful cyclists all wheeling the steeds of mass destruction. Cammie(with a y) was the first to sign up for yet another pleasure -able experience. Last years winner, Dan Smith, Quimper VS was ready to serve out severe punishment. Barry McGurk had brought along the supervet Jocky Johnston on a day release from the Clyde Valley Care Home. Wee Davie Zimmerman Millar took the event with his usual casual approach. He stopped within the first 400 yards after spludging through dog poo. Of course the real poo came much later. The event embraced two separate road races with an age split at 50 years. Off through Rothesay and passed Ascog the pace was fast until the Mount Stuart hill. Some riders struggled with Mitchell Fraser, in his first event being the first out the back. Mitchell remained at the rear until the finish whilst many others faded as the pace increased from Kilchattan Bay. The turn at Port Bannatyne the group was still together which included Stevie Russell, Stuart McGregor, Kenny Raeside, James Melville and the Edinburgh RC Junior rider Aiden McIlroy, included in the group was a Kojak lookalke in an Edinburgh cycle top but no one could read his number. On the climb back from Kilchattan it was Bazza McGurk looking for the flag but Dan Smith still retained potential , power and ability. The event finish had to be moved some 800 yards forward as the direct result of a fatal road traffic accident. We all saw the two riders with 300 yards to the line it was neck and neck but on the line it was Dan Smith again, although it was close. The 42 miles in 1.42.42. a pretty challenging time. We all saw the Edinburgh Kojak finish in the main bunch but still we know not who he was.
RACE 2 started life like a CTC club run all up the Mount Stuart incline together. A few threatening wee breaks but nothing to speak of. Past the Kilchattan road end we thought we had lost the lead motorcyclist but in fact two riders were well off the front. Squinting through the sun I thought, at first it was an apparition , in fact and indeed it was Davie Lang working with Bill Totten. The were slopping up the dropped riders from the first race like bread in soup. They included Hugh Jamieson, Big Steve McQueen amongst many others. At Port Bannatyne turn the lead pair were well in front with a 4 minute lead.
Bill Totten finally blew a gasket as Davie Lang attracted the dropped riders from the first race. Bill was still tramping along and there remained the possibility that he might have captured Davie Lang however that was not to be. Jocky Johnston took the third place and frankly the possibilities of him recapturing Davie Lang would only have been in a wet dream.
This had to be a top event from the Bute Wheelers with the motor cycles and all the stewards that they yearly provide. The constant steaming tea urn, the selection of brodies, sausage rolls, pies, the curry with chips The event attracted a lot of quality competitors to which we offer our sincerest thanks for your support. The Rothesay Licenced traders also offer thanks , in particular to the Stirling Bike Club.

And I thought SBC was Stirling Boozers Club . This stunning profile of an absolute athlete Eddie A attacks the hill in Rothesay.....unfortunately it was the wrong hill. He had lost the course and that was before the 5 Vodka's, 9 pints, 4 wee haufs and a shared Ginger Beer with the Edinburgh Road Club.
Big Stevie McQueen gets a leg puncture and is assisted up the hill by 'Shug Jamieson' . Twenty minutes later they were all standing at the side of the road as spectators.

Only 5 seconds separated Barry McGurk and Chris Smart from the course record. Chistopher struggled after his win in the Hill Climb earlier. His eyeballs like organ stops he held on to finish with 49.39. still behind Barry McGurk. Lee Whitelaw and young Aiden McElroy created a valid challenge taking the second place at 54.48. Lee DID get to the front ,however the young talented Edinburgh Road Club rider offered little shelter to Lee’s drafting attempt it was a credible time for this tough undulating course.

the BOOMERANG TROPHY TWO UP TEAM TIME TRIAL.
The BOOMERANG TROPHY sits proudly on the kitchen shelf in the home of Jock Milne. With two wins already established it has become his ambition, his life’s work and his cycling dedication. At 73 Jock had hopes of making it the “three in a row” on this Thornhill-Stirling course. Outside the hall the would be competitors broke into some community singing with an outburst of “Why are we wating!”. In fact the Community Hall was purported be in use with the Thornhill out of School group. The youngsters had been treated to a day out in a Holiday Camp at Corntonvale and no one had advised the hall keeper. Enthusiasm was high, even the illustrious Falkirk had risked leaving the area to venture into this unknown scenario. A club that is more used to communal cycling effort one might say. This established race club supports bacteria since it’s the only culture in their club. Nightingale members were like midgies with the same effect. “Can ah go after them”, “Why is ma number red and no black” “Where is the start?”” a’ve got a pin missing!” . The sign on desk was on melt down as we tried to enter the 34 teams. Fortunately the SVTTA membership turned out to offer assistance. It was similar to finding an oasis in the Sahara. The Thaynes, John Pardo, George McLaughlan and Jim Reid. Mr Harris the assigned time keeper was soon on the line as the first of the teams rolled out. The sun still bombarded is was rays, it was calm and it was dry. Tom Worthington and George Black trundled off with great hopes and expectations. I knew this event was serious when I observed Jocky Johnston wrapping his teeth between two slice of white bread and stuffing it into his back pocket of the cycle top. In next to no time riders were flashing over the line although there were some exceptions. ‘Self belief is the key’ and it worked for Graeme Cockburn and Jason Roberts. Graeme still looks like a reject from ‘Schindlers List’ . Big JJ almost chocked on his Tunnochs tea cake as the Cockburn-Roberts team clocked 52.11. The Nightingale were fair proud of their efforts. Graeme has a physical aura which intimidates, his ego now is supreme. Meanwhile the Boomerang Trophy result showed a change in the ownership of this prestigious trophy. With only seconds in the age standard it looked like a safe win for George Black. I have always been intrigued by George Black, he is a talented veteran rider who could amazingly well although he seldom races. He is still slight and slender, but over the years he’s developed this tight jaw and narrow eyes as if to say,”Who are you looking at” and it seems to have worked. The trophy will be presented to George at the annual ‘grab a granny’ SVTTA presentation in February 2009. Sadly this ends Jocks series of Boomerang wins. If we ever get a Cycling Museum in Scotland then he will surely be in it. Bob Taylor with Sean Gray missed on the handicap and age standards. His supreme 53.36 offering a 44.20 with his age handicap missed the target by 2minutes 29 seconds.
Of course the event was well supported creating a substantial deficiency on the calculating abilities of General George. As the candle flame illuminated the interior of Mr Harris’s vehicle they worked in the dark, in more ways than one, alas it was to no avail. The handicap system would take us until Friday to work it out. We can say with a degree of accuracy that the times are displayed below with the handicap times as the last entry. As you can see Ian Binning and Ian MacLeod were the actual winners. George Black wins the trophy with his standard at +7.42’Jock Milne was +7.21 Jocky Johnston was next at +6.40; Bob Taylor at 6.25 and Ian MacLeod on standard at 4.33.
Great to see Big Jack Campbell at the event although he did ask after sharing an enjoyable run with the boy racer Ian Henderson “what happens if you get scared to death twice?”. Jack said that since his retirement , if you think no one is caring about you then just stop paying your community tax!.
Mt sincerest thanks to all the friends, club members and chancers who supported this event . A special thanks to Jeanette Hazlett for her most generous donations to our prize list. Jeanette has a small Dr Who Capsule at Clachan of Campsie, next to Big Alistair Gow,(Wheelcraft) where she retails a gregarious mix of competitive quality cycle clothing with a degree of proficient, skilful and professional service(will that do?) I know that all thats stated above is in fact true....cos I was there.

Jock Milne,(on right) prepares in his attempt to win the coveted BOOMERANG TROPHY for the third time in succession. Unfortunately he was beaten by the Nightingales George Black.
Steve McQueen was one of the Falkirk's assault team. However their dastardly plan to cheat came unstuck when they were spaced at 4 team intervals.
